Every March 17th, thousands upon thousands of people march in Irish parades and wear their greenest clothing. With St. Patrick’s day quickly approaching, it is time to wear green clothing.

This day is celebrated in many parts of the world and many people wear green clothing on the day. Parties and foods are themed green.

This is the time for children to indulge in sweets and adults enjoy time with their families. Some people take a pilgrimage to St. Patrick’s Purgatory, which is an ancient pilgrimage site in Ireland. But why is this day so celebrated throughout the world?

St. Patrick was born in 387 AD in Britain. St. Patrick was captured by Irish raiders and was a slave. In his later years, he returned to his family and became a missionary. According to legend, he rid Ireland of all snakes.

These snakes were later thought to have been worshipers of serpent gods.  He baptized, confirmed, and ordained priests. Thousands converted to Christianity because of him. All of these activites were accomplished in less than 30 years.

The shamrock is a leaf of the clover plant and is the reason for the green colored clothing on St. Patrick’s Day. Many people wear the color green in honor of the plant because it is a symbol of the Holy Trinity.

People celebrate St. Patrick’s day to remember all that St. Patrick did for Ireland. Wearing green honors him and his works.
